How to Choose a Managed Service Provider (MSP)

Choosing the right MSP is one of the most important decisions for your business IT. A good MSP becomes a long-term partner. Here is what to evaluate.

Certifications

Look for Microsoft Partner status, CompTIA certifications (A+, Network+, Security+), and Cisco certifications. These demonstrate technical competence and ongoing training. For cybersecurity, look for providers with SOC 2 compliance or NIST framework experience.

Service Level Agreements (SLAs)

An SLA defines response and resolution times. A good MSP guarantees response within 15-30 minutes for critical issues and 1-4 hours for non-critical requests. Ask what happens if they miss the SLA.

Questions to Ask

How many clients do you support? What is your technician-to-client ratio? Do you provide 24/7 monitoring? What is included in the monthly fee versus billed extra? How do you handle onboarding? What happens if we want to leave?

Red Flags

Avoid MSPs that will not provide references, have no documented processes, or cannot explain their security stack. Be cautious of prices that seem too low — they often indicate understaffing or reactive-only service disguised as managed.

Get Multiple Quotes

Talk to 2-3 MSPs before deciding. Compare not just price but the scope of services, the tools they use, and the quality of their onboarding process. The cheapest option is rarely the best value.
